My freind’s father recieved a drone for Christmas. Christmas of the year 2015. Two weeks ago he decided to finally open up the packaging. I had heard of drones, but I had never seen one in person. It looked cheap. It looked like something from a toy store, not something that had so much potential in today’s society. After some practice and reading of the directions we were able to make the drone fly. The drone has a built in camera that can record video, or take pictures from its aerial view. This made me think of how one could use this technology in the classroom, and whether or not anyone else has ever had a similiar idea, making it so I was’nt crazy.
I found the article, 7 Ways to Use Drones in the Classroom on the website Edutopia. The author, Heather Wolpert had similiar ideas as myself. She was curriculum planner, and was deciding on new forms of curriculum for her district, and she thought drones could be use in almost every subject matter in its own unique way. Some of her ideas I liked more than others, but all had that bigger idea incorporated into it. One of my favorites was the use of the drone during gym class. One could fly the drone overhead of a flag football play, and then the students could watch the footage and learn from their mistakes. Another use of the drone that I liked was the use of it as a way to build community. By flying the drone above the school, tweens, who are often living in their little bubble where the world is only centered on their lives and their problems could physically see how they are just a small part of the community. This technique of flying the drone above the ground and taking these aerial pictures and video could also help the students learn about geography, and different habitats of animals and humans, and help them calculate distance from one point of their community to another. This would make the lessons more meaningful and help the students connect better to the information. It could also help them become excited about how they will use this little piece of equipment next, sparking their own ideas, and help them discuss what they want to learn and how they can learn that information best.
